Mickey Thompson's four-engined Challenger 1, which reached speeds of over 360 mph at the 1959 Bonneville Speed Trials. The following year at Bonneville, Thompson became the first American to break the 400 mph one-way mark, setting a new record at 406.60 mph, surpassing John Cobb's 402 mph.
