Fatal accident to William Howard "Pete" Snell. Dr. Howard Snively was the course physician. Seeing first-hand how poorly existing crash helmets worked, he started serious efforts to do something about it. Within weeks of Snell's death, friends and family created the Snell Memorial Foundation, and within a year the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) accepted the Snell Foundation's certifications of acceptable helmets.
